At a time when the Australian public’s trust in the institution of government was low, the Australian Electoral Commission set out to inspire tomorrow’s voters with renewed faith in our country’s democratic process.

Writs to Referendums moves conceptually and physically from the macro to the micro of democracy and elections, using immersive learning to bring an otherwise dry subject to life.

Navigating a richly interactive touchscreen map, visitors see how shifting electorate boundaries maintain an equal vote for all. Around the corner, video walls and cinematic soundscapes submerge visitors in election day buzz. Touchable UI overlays juxtapose the easy voter experience with the AEC’s extensive work behind the scenes. Finally, an uplifting documentary spotlights conversations with everyday Australians, passionate about voting to shape the society they live in.

Immersed in the beauty and complexity of Australia’s electoral system, students leave with a new appreciation for their own essential place within it.

Grumpy Sailor operates on lands belonging to the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, and the Boon Wurrung and Woiwurrung (Wurundjeri) peoples of the Kulin nation.

We acknowledge these traditional owners and we pay our respects to leaders past, present and emerging.
