In 2020, under the pressures of the pandemic, Atlassian had two options for their 15th Big Bash team-building event - cancel it, or move it online.

For a company that prides itself on team culture, pulling the pin on the event was not an option. Running it virtually and still hitting its employee engagement targets — now that was an opportunity.

Keeping the user experience front of mind and accessibility at its heart, we conceptualised a space where Atlassian’s could meet new team members online. We championed a cause close to Atlassian’s hearts, climate change, and developed it into a multiplayer experience. We brought random Atlassian's together in groups of 5 to solve puzzles and tasks over three increasingly complex game levels. The only way to complete these levels was if all members of the group participated. The 90-minute experience dances between cutscenes, video chat, games, animations, and puzzles — resulting in a genuine and emotionally resonant team-building experience. We designed Oddity to foster collaboration, discussion, and encouragement and, most importantly, instil a feeling of shared purpose and joint reward.

After each session finished, the groups could see their position on the Leaderboard - gamifying the annual meetup through a little friendly competition.

Grumpy Sailor operates on lands belonging to the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, and the Boon Wurrung and Woiwurrung (Wurundjeri) peoples of the Kulin nation.

We acknowledge these traditional owners and we pay our respects to leaders past, present and emerging.
